Julie Shiyou Woodard Presents At Rockport Fulton Chamber Of Commerce Smart Home America

Many areas of Texas and Florida are just beginning to rebuild from the storms of 2017. Since Hurricane Harvey's landfall, we've been helping local, state and federal entities in affected areas of the Coastal Bend of Texas better understand how to build better and be resilient. We've hosted town halls, training sessions, have been invited to workshops and to speak at local Chambers of Commerce in Rockport, Port Aransas, Aransas Pass and Corpus Christi, Texas.

Texas Update:

We are collaborating with the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) and many other partners and we've seen successes:

-An 800 unit community in Rockport, TX, Key Allegro, has adopted FORTIFIED construction standards into their deed restrictions.

-Smart Home America is now an official FEMA resource for affected communities.

We also participated in the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety's most recent high wind testing at their research center in late 2017. The test received excellent media attention. Watch this video featuring Coastal Alabamas FORTIFIED Market.

We've updated DonGoof.org to provide information for rebuilding, new construction and how to navigate the claims and disaster recovery process. We'll continue to refine this resource in preparation for the 2018 Hurricane season.

Flood Update:

Smart Home America is advocating for better flood-resistant building standards. We stand with 28 leading organizations calling for Congress to create a flood-ready approach to building and rebuilding our structures and infrastructure. Read the letter.

Funding Update:

We have exciting news about new partnerships and renewed support to start the year. I am pleased to announce that The Allstate Foundation has renewed funding for our hands-on training project at FORTIFIED Homes built by Habitat for Humanity in four states. We also received the Gulf Star Award from the Gulf of Mexico Alliance (GOMA).

We are grateful for this support, and the support from all of our partners. The work to build resilience and improve construction standards is a long-term commitment and we are dedicated to improving the resilience of communities across the US.

Thank you for your support!
